Forget what you know: Does wearing a bra make your breasts sag or lift?

The bra has always brought a “what if?” to women’s lives. For years we have been told that wearing a bra is necessary for our health. However, research is the kind that challenges some stereotypes about the habit of wearing a bra.

It is useful for women who see bras as a necessity to pay attention to this research, taking into account their health.

Without further ado, let’s see if Isaac Newton or Archimedes will win the bra-wearing battle.

The benefits of not wearing a bra are not what you think.

Prof. Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports medicine specialist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besancon in France, conducted a study suggesting that wearing a bra does not prevent breast sagging.

The study, which Rouillon conducted for 15 years, involved 330 women between the ages of 18 and 35. The participants’ measurements were added each year and the data was shared at the end of the process.

It was found that the nipples of women who did not wear a bra and stopped wearing a bra were lifted by 7 millimeters. These women also had firmer breasts. The study also provided evidence to refute the theory that “wearing a bra relieves back pain”.

Wearing a bra leads to muscle wasting.

Since the researchers also believe that wearing a bra inhibits the growth of breast tissue, they examined this in their study and found that not wearing a bra made the muscles work harder.

Rouillon said that bras are not the necessity they are made out to be and that medically and anatomically, there is no benefit to depriving the breast of gravity. On the contrary, she said, wearing a bra weakens the pectoral muscles.

The volunteers seem happy to take part in the study. Capucine, a 28-year-old woman, said she had not worn a bra for two years and that her breasts breathed better, she stood up straighter and had less back pain.

Looking at this study and the volunteers’ testimonies, Archimedes seems to be the winner, but there are some things to keep in mind.

Let’s not forget that the study was limited to 35-year-olds.

Rouillon, perhaps to be on the safe side, says that there is no conclusion that not everyone should wear a bra. A 45-year-old woman who wears a bra for the rest of her life and then takes it off will not see any benefit.

We know that there are many discourses about whether to wear a bra or not. Even the statements that wearing a bra increases the risk of breast cancer were widespread for a while. However, as a result of the studies, no findings were found that these situations affect breast cancer, whether the bra is worn or not, or whether it is worn only during the day.

Some experts state that bralessness does not provide enough support for breast tissue and that it will eventually tighten and sag. Some experts say that sagging depends only on breast density.

The only thing that everyone agrees on is that there are multiple factors that affect sagging and this issue cannot be attributed only to the bra. Age, genetics, and weight are just some of them.

While we hear different information every day about whether to wear a bra or not, the best thing to do is to decide according to comfort. Some people are comfortable with a bra because they have large breasts, while others are more comfortable without a bra or with a sports bra. In short, whatever you feel like.
