Is torque more important in the performance of cars or horsepower?

In general, users who buy cars -especially people who buy cars for the first time-first look at the horsepower of the car. “The more horsepower, the more power!” although such a perception has settled in people’s minds, the issue of when and how to use power is usually not in the minds. Today we’ll tell you about torque, horsepower, and when these two can come in handy.

What Is Torque?

Torque actually means rotating force. In a simpler way, in fact, torque can also be called the thrust force that the engine transfers to the wheels.

The factor determining the traction power of vehicles is torque. The main reason the car’s performance is good, especially when you try to go uphill, is because the torque is high. The excess torque of large vehicles such as trucks, buses, tractors are also directly related to the traction force. The higher the torque, the greater the load-carrying capacity of the vehicle. Loads of large weights require great traction.

Of course, the load we’re talking about here is not just loaded vehicles, such as tractors or trucks, where you attach a trailer to the back. 4-5 people in the passenger vehicles are also included in the category we mentioned. A few people riding in a car may not seem to have as much impact as a truck’s trailer, but even small weights for passenger vehicles can affect the driving experience.

What Is Horsepower?

Horsepower (HP), which we see a lot as HP (horsepower), the English acronym, can be defined as the amount of power that can move 75 kilograms of weight forward by 1 meter in 1 second. It was called horsepower by James Watt, considering that this is approximately equivalent to the power of horsepower.

Horsepower roughly determines the maximum speed the car can reach. Excess horsepower allows the car to go to high speeds on a straight road. Of course, it doesn’t matter that it’s just too much horsepower. The vehicle’s other equipment should also not prevent the maximum of horsepower from being used.

Maximum torque, maximum horsepower, and speed relation

It may seem nice to have maximum torque and/or maximum horsepower values at high values, but it is also important at what revs the car will reach these values. The maximum torque to be achieved at lower revs in the city of your vehicle because you will use a more sensible option would be to achieve maximum torque at low revs and less fuel consumption for both departure and slopes, which means you will have better acceleration.

For example, you have a car that turns 7000 cycles. This car reaches maximum torque at 3500 rpm, and to reach the maximum horsepower, you need to turn 6000 rpm. In a situation like this, if you don’t lean on the gas on an empty highway, you can’t get to maximum horsepower in the highest gear in the city, but you can access maximum torque. This means that you will not waive your car’s franchise. In addition, achieving the required power at lower revs ensures that the amount of fuel spent is less.

With this feature, we can also explain why diesel-powered vehicles are economically popular. Because diesel-powered cars can reach high torque at low revs, they are highly preferred both in terms of the feeling of attack in a short time and in terms of fuel economy.

In gasoline engines, higher revs can be achieved, as it also takes some time to reach maximum torque, but gasoline engines perform more on a long road than diesel engines. Of course, as a disadvantage of this high performance, using the car at high speeds will increase fuel consumption.

Which is more important?

First, it is necessary to say that torque and horsepower are two halves of an apple, such as the sine qua non of each other. A car with high horsepower has a mediocre torque value, which means that it takes a lot of time to reach the maximum power of the car, but usually, cars with high horsepower also have high torque values.

In fact, this choice depends on the driver’s driving pleasure, what they expect from the car, and how they want to drive the car. If you want instant accelerations and you like the car gluing you to the seat, high-torque vehicles will satisfy you. No, I’m not interested in instant acceleration, if you want my car to fly me on a long road, then high-horsepower vehicles will suit you better.
