Collaboration expands to joint optical technology research and development

Beijing, China, and Wetzlar, Germany. Xiaomi and Leica have announced a new phase in their partnership with the establishment of the “Xiaomi x Leica Optical Research Institute.” This new institute will focus on joint research and development in optical technology, digital imaging, and artificial intelligence.

Jointly developing cutting-edge technologies

The institute will leverage the strengths of both Xiaomi and Leica to focus on four main areas:

  • Designing ultra-precise optical lenses in a compact form factor
  • Achieving optimal performance in computational photography
  • Defining optical standards for lenses
  • Conducting research and applications in optoelectronic technology

Both companies have made significant investments in the institute and have established a joint team of over 200 experts. Peter Karbe, the legendary optical designer behind Leica’s fourth-generation lenses, including iconic designs such as the Noctilux and APO series, will serve as the Optical Expert of the joint venture. Zeng Xuezong, Senior Vice President of Xiaomi Group and President of Xiaomi’s Smartphone Department, will serve as the Director.

Planned state-of-the-art laboratories

According to the announcement, three major laboratories are planned for the institute in China. These laboratories are said to be among the best, largest, and most automated camera laboratories in the world.

Upcoming Xiaomi 14 Ultra to feature advanced optical system

While the fruits of this institute’s work have yet to be seen, Leica Camera AG CEO Matthias Harsch has stated that the optical system in the upcoming Xiaomi 14 Ultra will feature the best Summilux lenses ever used in a mobile device.
